As an RV journalist, my work can be hectic and they are often in a short period of time, so a motorhome is ideal because it transport, accommodation and a mobile all in one.

Not long ago, I had to a few days in Ballina on the north-coast of so I borrowed a Star RV Aquila in Brisbane. Star RV is not a new company; the recently-established upmarket arm of Apollo Apollo has rental depots Australia, New Zealand and the USA, but RV motorhomes are only available in Brisbane and Cairns.

My Aquila was based on a VW Crafter van At 7.1m (23ft 4in) the Crafter is an excellent length for a small motorhome or a large It has a 100kW turbodiesel motor, is the same size motor to much larger vehicles, so is plenty of grunt in the very (330Nm) engine. The six-speed gearbox — a derivative of the Mercedes Benz Sprintshift has improved over time but it has a bit of hesitation during quick changes.

The original VW windows been retained and tinted, a good perception of space giving only the slightest of being in a fish bowl. The is that only two of the windows can be — the front offside and the sliding door — leaves the rear a bit under-ventilated in hot But you could open the rear to alleviate this. The motorhome has no and the exterior attachments include the Truma water heater, gas bin for a gas cylinder and the Thetford toilet

Inside, two lounges, with a Lagun-mounted table in between, make up the area. There is a kitchen on the nearside with a second directly opposite. That the space behind the driver’s for a small bathroom and a small Neither of the cab seats swivel

The lower cabinetry is chocolate in colour, which might a bit dark, but it is offset by the beige lockers and the generous windows.

One of the of a van of this length is that lounges can be used. They not create plenty of seating but make up a bed measuring 1.93×1.73m 4in x 5ft 8in). The lounges can also be as single beds but they be quite narrow. The under-lounge space has an open aluminium so large items such as chairs, suitcases and a fixed could be stored easily but items could not. lockers run along both of the van, including above the benches, providing storage for other things.

Old hands will tell you it’s best to use soft bags rather than with hard-shells when in a rental motorhome, particularly on a holiday. The soft ones are easier to pack away, in smaller campers.

The split kitchen creates versatility and allows for more space and extra storage The nearside bench has a Smev three-burner cooktop, stainless sink, and a 12V Waeco 110L From a washing up point of I think the sink/cooktop combo be better located at the rear end of the The van has a 12V compressor fridge which, in a vehicle won’t be much of an but overnight stops without power will be problematic a solar panel. The two cupboards and one come with saucepans, toaster and other essentials for vehicle life, but a shelf in the cupboard wouldn’t go astray.

Across the way, there is a drawer under the bench and a where the water heater is The upper shelf provides for plates, cups and glasses and is an LG microwave in an overhead locker. A flatscreen TV is mounted to the wall the wardrobe.

While the lower of the wardrobe is used for hanging the upper section houses all the including the hot water switch and gauges. This is quite a idea, as they are hidden but accessible.

There isn’t a great of room in the bathroom but there is enough space to sit on the loo or turn in the variable-height shower. There is no but the mirrored finish on the outside of the door is a good substitute.

For the part, the electrics are well-appointed, 240V powerpoints in all the right and 12V halogen lighting located the overhead lockers with the of the fluorescent light handily above the entry door.

Yes, this is a vehicle but it’s available for purchase, too, badged as the Euro. Regardless of its name, motorhome moves at a lively and it’s quite maneuverable it comes to parking and reversing.

a bit less space inside for a coach conversion of the same but for a couple who plan to spend of their time outdoors, not really going to be a problem.
