This latest version of crowd-swallowing people-mover gets front-end styling that the Caravelle more into with VW’s mainstream – squint and you can see hints of Polo and in the Caravelle’s face – while there are new instruments and improved seats.

There are two up-to-the-minute on offer, a choice of six-speed or seven-speed DSG gearboxes, the option of drive and even a long-wheelbase available (but only on the SE-spec models), which the Caravelle’s overall length 4892mm to 5292mm.

Engines are both 2.0-litre either in 138bhp, 251lb ft TDI or a more entertaining 178bhp, ft twin-turbocharged BiTDI incarnation. We the higher-powered version, fitted a seven-speed DSG ’box and on a standard-length Mated to the DSG gearbox, the BiTDI returns a claimed 35.8mpg on the cycle while emitting of CO2. The 138bhp variant with the same transmission a claimed 34.4mpg on the combined and emits 216g/km.

And surprisingly decent to drive it is, Okay, so the Caravelle never like much other the converted van it is, but the BiTDI motor has low-end torque to make the feel sprightly (at least it’s loaded with six and their luggage).
