Intermeccanica TYP82 — Volkswagen Kubelwagen

After two years of development and some six months of market testing in Japan, where it was received with enthusiasm and road tested by six leading car and 4 x 4 magazines, the verdict is unanimous. With limited slip differential the Kubelwagen outperforms a four wheel drive jeep. It is now available here. Based on a rock solid tubular steel space frame developed for it, it is unitized with the heavy duty ISO resin fiberglass body, as per other Intermeccanica products. Having secured the original designs, Intermeccanica is able to assume that the appearance of the Kubelwagen is identical to the first series (1940) vehicle designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche for the German High Command. The Kubelwagen, ...

Museum Musings 2013 VW Kubelwagen, Porsche Museum Gmund, Photo by Ronan McGrath By Ronan McGrath, UCR Member VW Type 64 When in Germany, many Porsche owners and enthusiasts visit the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen, which has the finest collection anywhere. There is, however, a much smaller private museum in Gmund, Austria. In 1944, as the war was approaching its end, Ferdinand Porsche made the decision to move family and staff out of Stuttgart to rural Austria where he owned land and had a home. Temporary buildings were set up, and repair and design work was commenced in a disused sawmill. There, the very first Porsches were built in 1948. Only about 50 cars were built in Gmund, and they ...

Tobruk to Kaap in a Kubelwagen Wheels24 — Volkswagen Kubelwagen

Tobruk to Kaap in a Kubelwagen Author: DAVE FALL I seem to spend quite a bit of time at my local garage in Muizenberg, Cape Town, these days and spot many an interesting car or motorcycle on the forecourt. There was a Morgan Plus 8 with German number plates but more recently a Cape Town-registered Kubelwagen (translated from German, it’s tub truck). A what? I hear you ask. Proud owner of this 1942 Kubelwagen is Barry Gasson, a car enthusiast and resident of St James. When asked why he owned a German Second World War military-style vehicle he told me he had nothing but admiration for this VW-made four-door desert machine. GENUINE VEHICL E It’s strongly built and made to last ...

How did this 1939 Volkswagen Kubelwagen reach India RushLane Indian… — Volkswagen Kubelwagen

How did this 1939 Volkswagen Kubelwagen reach India Among the vintage cars showcased at Lavasa last weekend, there was a Volkswagen Kubelwagen belonging to Dhananjay Badamikar. Not much is known about the historic vehicle except that it was manufactured in 1939, and is powered by a horizontally opposed four-cylinder petrol engine. The 4-speed manual has a 3050mm wheelbase for the 4990 mm tempo and weighs in at 1909 kg. Dhananjay Badamikar bought his Kubelwagen from a dealer in Hyderabad back in 2004. The war vehicle carries 2 spare wheels hoisted on either side of the tempo. While there’s no real average or top speed to talk about, the car in question did endure a few breakdowns on it’s ...

Funtodrive SUV couldn’t boonie bash — Volkswagen Kubelwagen

Fun-to-drive SUV couldn’t boonie bash National Post · During the Second World War, one of the best assets the Allied forces had was the four-wheel-drive Jeep, a go-anywhere, do-anything quarter-ton utility vehicle. It was manufactured by Willys-Overland (and Ford under licence). By the end of the war, some 600,000 had been built. The Jeep’s reputation was so vaunted that, after the war, Willys-Overland began marketing a civilian version called the CJ. With this model, Jeep made a successful transition to peacetime, the CJ becoming the progenitor of the sport-utility vehicle that is so popular today. During the war, the German army also had its Jeep, a light, versatile machine ...

1940 Willy’s MB/ Ford GPW — Volkswagen Kubelwagen

1940 Willy’s MB/ Ford GPW Related History Even though the world had seen widespread mechanisation of the military during World War I and the United States Army had already used four-wheel drive trucks in it, supplied by the Four Wheel Drive Auto Co. (FWD), by the time World War II was dawning, the United States Department of War were still seeking a light, cross-country reconnaissance vehicle. As tensions were heightening around the world in the late 1930s, the U.S. Army asked American automobile manufacturers to tender suggestions to replace its existing, aging light motor vehicles, mostly motorcycles and sidecars but also some Ford Model T’s ] This resulted in several prototypes ...
