Morris Mini Specs eHow — Volkswagen Kurierwagen

Engine The Morris Mini Minor, and its near identical sibling, the Austin Mini, were born of economic necessity. The United Kingdom was reeling from the economic devastation of World War II. As a result, Issigonis designed a 34-horsepower 850cc engine ...

Volkswagen Thing Hemmings Daily — Volkswagen Kurierwagen

Archive for the ‘Volkswagen Thing’ tag Hemmings Find of the Day – 1973 Volkswagen Thing The Volkswagen thing can trace its heritage back to the World War II Kuebelwagen, roughly the German army’s equivalent of our own do-it-all Jeep. In the late 1960s, Volkswagen modernized the design, then offered the Type 181 to the contemporary German army as a light-duty transport vehicle. It didn’t take long for civilian interest in the robust and mechanically simple convertible to grow, and Volkswagen soon began selling the Type 181 as the Trekker in the U.K. the Safari in Mexico, the Kurierwagen (“Courier Car”) in Germany and the Thing in the United States. While relatively popular here ...

Wheel Motion VW copy.jpg Posted: Sunday, July 1, 2012 12:00 am It’s a VW Thing Ken Curtis — Special to The Garden Island The Garden Island Newspaper | 0 comments Germans call it a “Kurierwagen,” the British, a “Trekker.” In Mexico, it’s a “Safari,” but in the United States, it’s a “Thing.” It’s hard to put the Thing in the same category as the Hummer, but both have military ancestry. During World War II, the German version of the Jeep was a VW-based “Kubelwagen,” meaning “bucket car” to the Deutsche. While European governments were developing lightweight, amphibious four-wheel drive military vehicles, Germany still wanted a lightweight, inexpensive ...
