Volkswagen Assimilates Porsche
Volkswagen has finalized its control over Porsche. The Wolfsburg based carmaker agreed to buy the 50.1 percent stake in Porsches automotive business it doesnt already, which marks the end of an interesting albeit complex and turbulent history.
The history between the two companies goes way back. Porsche always had a close relationship with VW. For example, the first Volkswagen Beetle was designed by Ferdinand Porsche. The Porsche 924 was originally intended to be Volkswagens flagship coup. Other examples for these kind of collaborations are VW-Porsche 914 and 916, Audi RS2, or the VW Touareg, Audi Q7 and the ...

As the sixties progressed, a strengthening Mark and escalating prices presented a Porsche with a dilemma: Did it want to abandon the affordable sports car market due to cost pressures, or should it develop a new model to pick up the enthusiast the now expensive 911/912 left behind? The problem was, of course, that affordable translated into large production runs in order to achieve economies of scale. Porsche had neither the capacity nor the desire to produce that many cars. So, to make a long story short, they teamed up with Volkswagen, who was looking for a replacement for its aging Kharmann-Ghia. Together they ...

Strong Ties and a Departure From the Norm
The idea that the project would be a joint effort between Volkswagen and Porsche had been decided in the mid-1960s, when Ferry Porsche met VW’s head honcho, Heinrich Nordhoff. The new car seemed perfect for both of them — it would provide Stuttgart with the desired entry level Porsche, and Wolfsburg with a new car which would broaden the appeal of the brand. The deal involved the two companies sharing development and building costs, sharing knowledge on handling and dynamics and mass-production. Also written into the contract was that the vehicle was to be supplied with both ...

Amidships amusement from Porsche on the rise
Feature Article from Hemmings Motor News
That the Porsche 914 is considered by certain cognoscenti as a Volkswagen is ultimately unfair. Yes, the car was a collaborative effort between Volkswagen and Porsche, and, yes, the car did wear Volkswagen and Porsche branding simultaneously in Europe. But the original plan was to build two versions of the car. The four-cylinder would be sold as a top-line Volkswagen, and the six sold as a Porsche. This was not how it played out in the United States. The six- and four-cylinder cars were sold beside each other in Porsche showrooms.
Though the four- and six-cylinder cars appeared cut of the same cloth, they ...

The 1974 Porsche 914 / A Porsche-VW Collaboration
The Porsche 914 as featured in this article was among the 914 models built from 1970 through 1976. The car was first unveiled in 1969 at the Frankfurt Auto Show.
1974 Porsche 914
This model was to replace the Porsche 912 and was an effort to appeal to the mass car market. Not that Porsche was ever thought of as an automobile for the masses but this was their intent with the 914. The 1974 Porsche also represents a close collaboration with Volkswagen as the automaker had done once before.
A Low Priced Sports Car
The Porsche 914 was meant to be a light weight sports car with rear wheel drive that was intended to be affordable to many. The ...

The mid-engined VW-Porsche 914 was never popular — but it did lead to the Boxster, says David Wilkins
It seemed like a good idea at the time. That seems to be the best explanation for the birth of the VW-Porsche 914, one the most interesting but least loved post-war German cars.
It seemed like a good idea at the time. That seems to be the best explanation for the birth of the VW-Porsche 914, one the most interesting but least loved post-war German cars.
In the mid-Sixties, Volkswagen and Porsche identified an overlapping requirement for a new model. Porsche’s 911 was a success but the demise of the older 356 had left a gap at the bottom of its range that the 912, a budget version ...

The Porsche 914 — You are probably thinking, given the price of new parts is the same as a 911, why in the hell would anybody restore a 914 Porsche? The so called, Poor man’s Porsche with its boxy shape and pop-off top had me even before I could drive, building 1/25th scale models of them at age 14 back in 1973. Now those same vintage Revell model kits come up on eBay occasionally for bidding, usually getting about $50 for kits that originally cost $4.95!
The 914’s story is full of irony, the best selling Porsche automobile of all time and keeping the company afloat during a time when new, ...

Here are some extras to look for when buying your car.
Sway Bars. Sway bars were optional in most years, and it’s usually quite uncommon to find a car with them installed. The can be added later on but it can take some time and patience, as well as a little welding.
Center Console with Gauges. Originally sold with the Apearance Group Package, the center console is a popular goodie with all 914 owners. They cost about $300-$350 for a perfect condition one with the center cushion, all the gauges, and the correct heater handle. See Figure 1 for a picture of the center console.

Porsche 914 Restoration Information
Manuals
No Porsche 914 restoration project can begin without factory repair and parts manuals. Originals and copies are available from Porsche parts specialists online and at brick-and-mortar shops. There are also several restoration guides specifically addressing how to rebuild a Porsche 914.
Volkswagen Parts
The beauty of restoring a Porsche 914 is that the Porsche shares many mechanical components with Volkswagen. Some brake, suspension and engine parts are interchangeable. If Porsche parts vendors do not have specific parts, Volkswagen dealers and aftermarket parts vendors may substitute some parts. Some parts, however, are difficult to locate. Porsche’s ...
