Review: Volkswagen Cross TDI

Driven September 2013

In a TopGear fashion, here’s all you wanted to know about the Cross Polo. in a nutshell. The Polo doesn’t come an off-roading package. The ground is same as before. And its engine is as as the one powering the regular diesel Plus, all the plastic cladding and bits that you see on this they come at an additional of Rs 65,000 over the Polo TDI You would ask, what’s the of this hatchback then? We we are still scratching our heads on one.

So there it is. All that about the Cross Polo is now to you. But still, if you wish to more about this macho Polo hatchback read on.

As seen in the image above, the differences start right the front. There is a chunkier new bumper, round fog lamps and a chin to differentiate it from the Polo. The front grille too is – it now gets a single chrome instead of two. Further the Cross Polo from a Polo is the plastic cladding through the length and breadth of the which also makes its 20mm longer and wider a Polo. A new roof rail, coloured wing mirrors and a rear diffuser sum up the exterior The ‘Livon’ Titanium black is the only distinctive element of the Polo’s interior and that’s not much. All the added plastic and of silver does make the Polo stand out in the crowd. It like a rugged, taller and a powerful cousin of the otherwise Polo. But this, as we had mentioned is just an illusion.

Let us explain why. It’s to say the claddings give it a rugged but then there’s no extra action that this is capable of. Identical suspension and tyre profile means the clearance stays the same at which isn’t enough to SUV-grade bad roads. And then the – it’s the same 1.2-litre, turbo-diesel seen in the Polo, identical 74bhp and 180Nm of Also, this typical oil-burner is relatively noisy at and the decibels only get higher increase in revs. The 5-speed gearbox too isn’t the smoothest The shifts aren’t crisp, and a greater chunk of power only after 1800rpm, you to work through the box often driving in the city, where the can be a bit annoying.

Life is much easier on the as compared to the city. Once the crosses 2000rpm, there is a surge in power till the mark after which the tapers down. Feedback the steering wheel is good but impressed us the most is the ride it’s well sorted for conditions and the Cross Polo easy work of the road However, this comes at the of excessive body roll and is a bit of a letdown.

But what’s more worrying is the tag. At Rs 9.21 lakh, Mumbai, the Cross Polo is Rs more than the similarly TDI Highline. You then start what is in the Cross Polo the German giant is asking a for. Mechanical bits are feature list is as colourful as a Highline and looking through our the Polo looks way better the Cross Polo. So if exclusivity is you are looking out for then the GT TSI makes for a far choice which is just Rs dearer to the Cross Polo. it’s loaded with new age

3-cyl, 1,199cc turbo 74bhp, 180Nm, 5M, 0-100: 30-50kph in 3rd: 3.74sec, in 4th: 6.78sec, 50-70 in 7.18sec, 0-80kph in 2.53sec/25.88m, kpl: 13.2, highway 18.7, 1155kg, 45 litres tank, Rs 9.21 lakh, Mumbai

The verdict

We are not too sure how to it a pointless hatchback without calling it a pointless hatchback. The cladding only makes it tough, but deep down it’s just a Polo beefier-looking exterior bits. expensive and offers nothing in return. Go for the GT TSI instead.
