VW Diesel-powered GenSet

My friend, Bob and I built a VW Diesel-powered standby outfit, starting in August of Over a year later, about finished.

The engine came from an ’84 head from an ’85 an ’80 Dasher indjection and other parts from a of junk VWs that are laying here. The generator is a 10KW, unit from Northern Northern Hydraulics) We started an engine from an ’80 and a bellhousing from a Rabbit, but due to an ran it with no oil pressure for nearly 10 As you can imagine, this did the engine no at all, so we built up this Cash Cadillac to replace it.

To start with, we needed a of driving the generator via belt. We at a ‘good’ speed for the engine by my Jetta down the road; it like 45 MPH gave good with a reasonable engine Checking with a tach, we that to be 2300RPM, more or That meant a 1.6:1 and we had keep the generator turning in the direction as the engine, meaning a simple gearbox couldn’t be As we wanted to keep all side off the rear crankshaft bearing, a bearing and coupling arrangement was

The parts for the coupling, etc. are in this shot. There’s a plate that is attached to the VW plate with 3 shoulder washers, and Delrin sleeves/bushings. We pieces of rubber hose, but were quickly pounded The flywheel need to have 3 to accomodate the bolt heads, and the had to be chopped and have a bearing installed. The latter is also the engine mount. Here, bolted the VW drive plate the crank; you can see the bolt mounting welded onto it. This shows the shaft and drive assembled to the VW drive plate, one shows the flywheel bolted to the VW plate, and this last one the rear of the engine. completely with the 1.5 shaft sticking

Of course, we needed a frame from 4 channel iron) to it all together, but the radiator and generator mounted on it yet.

Here’s a pic of the unit from the RH side. and the LH side. It’s sitting on the pad the barn, being tested as pics were taken. control is accomplished by a surplus with a linkage to the injection You’ll note the double belt drive; The Book that it’s inadaquet, so we to this Gilmer Belt The white spot on the upper is reflective tape for my optical This closeup from the RH shows the governor, etc. The yellow thing is a plug the timing hole in the bellhousing.

Cooling is from the Dasher and a fan from a Geo of some sort. Of we need a control panel. The thing in the lower LH corner is the advance, used for starting, and the in the center is a non-working electronic

We tested it by taking the 240-volt and feeding it to this setup 4 electric range elements. The holds right at 235, or not, and the 7000-watt load the RPM drop by only 100 at the generator That load is over and really makes the speed move a bunch when On!

Here it is, installed in the GenShed, outside (the orange on the RH side is the fuel tank), and inside. Speed is monitored by frequency meter. The radiator and exhaust looks like from the back of the shed. The looks like this the front.

Here’s some thoughts on the project:
