2010 Volkswagen Golf Review

10 February, 2010 1

In Volkswagen released the Mk I Golf on the public as a replacement for the nearly 30 old Beetle. It was originally designed as a people mover like the but over the last 25 years, has into much more, or has it?

one could argue that the GTI of the Golf, especially the Mk IV “R32” are some of the most satisfying cars on the road, which is why people have owned generations of the hot hatch. But what the base Golf? Does trickle down from the GTI to the that even the more versions of the car can be more than people movers? Or, to put the question simply, can a base Golf me smile?

Read on to find

Our test car is the $21,000 base (Mk VI) Golf 5-door, which, the exception of the 3-door version, is about the cheapest way out of a VW dealership. powered by a 170hp, 2.5 liter, engine mated to a 6-speed transmission. The only option to our test vehicle was the Cold Package, which adds seats and mirrors, but besides it’s as basic as it gets.

VW has said that Walter De who designed the car, took both from the Mk I and Mk IV Golfs, the prettiest of the 6 generations, when the Mk VI. If he did, I don’t see it. While the car is a aerodynamic, wind-cutting shape, its is completely devoid of presence. In I wouldn’t take a second if I saw one parked on the side of the road. The silver/black color of our test car and 14” wheels with plastic don’t do it any favors in that either. In all fairness, I find the variant much more and proportionate.

Inside the car, get much, much better. the Mk V golf, people complained the interior styling had become almost an afterthought, and that was certainly cured in this Compared to the $29k Honda Si I drove last week, the felt significantly upmarket, advantage of the BMW-like “textured dash, which feels and soft to the touch, especially the bonnet covering the gauge For a base level car, the seats are surprisingly sporty. No seats here, but there is an lumbar support for the driver, welcome in my case. I love the and feel of really good seats with bolstering, and are the best I’ve seen at price point. Rear and legroom is also quite with our 6’1” intern to fit easily behind me  (6’3”) for a 2 hour drive. It’s a 5-seater, this Golf, and a road-tripper if you’re so inclined. The was larger than I expected, to carry our 3 camera bags, 2 and 2 helmets  to the race track having to fold the seat

The Golf’s controls are basic and and everything is exactly where you and expect it to be. The gauges are clear and and the steering wheel, though of a leather wrapping, is the perfect and shape for sporty driving. I the fact that all 4 windows auto up/down functions, that many other skimp out on, but I don’t like how you to shut off the headlights manually. I require a full HID setup, but if you the lights on when you shut the car, the dim parking lights stay on, which I learned I woke up to a dead battery the morning. Manufacturers take When the keys are out of the car, and the car is all external lights should shut off.

The radio is as simple as it gets, large, clear buttons and an auxiliary input. I would opt for the Premium Sound package, as radio simply doesn’t very good, especially the FM radio signal. And what’s on with the HVAC controls? the same 3-knob system we all but the knob to control where the air from is all the way to the right, and it’s impossible to read which to turn the knob to get the desired

The biggest and most pleasant happens when you start the up and actually drive it. I can see why the golf is so (3100 lbs) for its size, must be hundreds of pounds of dampening in the car. With the closed, road and engine is virtually nonexistent, and wind only becomes apparent 70 or 80 mph.

I honestly can’t believe the engine is what comes for $21k. It’s 170hp may not like much, but the 177 lb/ft of means that around the Golf feels, dare I say it, It feels every bit as fast as the Mini Cooper S I drove. web site says that the is, “More than you’ll need. That’s why we put it in there.”

And you what? They are right. someone like me is going to the GTI version for maximum performance, but average daily commuter think the Golf is a rocketship. If were a downside to this it’s twofold:

1)    Gas for a car this size, is merely Over my 3 days with the car in driving conditions, I averaged mpg, as reported by the on-board

2)    How it sounds outside the While the cabin is so well you don’t really hear the at all, from the outside it more Chevy Cobalt Audi A4.

Torque steer is completely from the Golf experience; if you mash the throttle with the cranked hard over, hands wouldn’t know it. The is extremely compliant, and rides like a luxury car than else I’ve driven $30,000. I’m sure the optional 16” would take a bit of that but as tested, the car rides like its from a single block of and mounted on an Audi A6 suspension. the road got windy, I tried to use the shifting option (lever no paddles), and it was disappointing that the indicators were the wrong Again, manufacturers take you want to pull the lever you to shift up, like they do in cars. Re-learning the process in some embarrassing wrong-direction annoying the hell out of my girlfriend. The driving experience given combination is surely the automatic “S” which, if you control the engine the throttle, will always to find the right gear on its

The bottom line: The Golf a sports car, that’s they make the GTI for. But if you your eyes and rode in one, you’d think you in a much more expensive car something that was out the door for If anonymity is your thing, and you want to have the last pick up a Golf with a few for $25,000 and laugh at everyone that overpaid for their of luxury.
