I have a 1997 GTi 4-cylinder which was cutting out at random the oil light coming on. It would start after a few minutes, but the occurred in dangerous situations motorway areas with no shoulder! Initially I took it to a who charged eighty pounds for a check that revealed wrong. VW dealers seem to random components at huge faced with these of faults. I think there are distinct varieties of stalling as follows:

1. Engine cuts out at low when the clutch is pressed for coming up to a junction. This is accompanied by an erratic idle.

Solution: Get some carb and remove the large hose the air box. Clean the butterfly and the from the smaller pipes into this area.

2. Car starts but cuts out after a few

Solution: This is likely to be the code on the ignition key not being Have you dropped the key — be a broken chip inside. be the transponder coil which round the ignition switch, or connections or earths to the factory

3. Car cuts out at random while you are I think this is the trickiest one to It could be a number of things, and I they are — most first:

1. The Fuel Pump — this is the one on the bottom of the fuse box. Might be a 137 on it. Does it run hot? Does it cause the stalling? I suggest it by making up a lead which the contacts made by the two large connectors together. Use 16 Amp wire to be and don’t leave it in when not or it will drain the battery. If cures the problem replace the

Cost about 13 pounds.

2. The ECU number 30. This is on the second row of going up, and is third one along. it anyway as its only 6.50 and to have been redesigned at point.

3. If that did not solve the Look and see if the rev counter goes a bit mad before it cuts out. If is the case then you probably a dodgy engine speed It costs 200 quid plus to this

changed by a VW dealer. However I got one GSF for 45 quid. It is a Honeywell Hall sensor, part and you might get it cheaper from them. It is a bit — you need to remove the engine mounting — put a under the sump. Also the oil-filter off and use a long hex key.

If does not work look at the sensor in the distributor. You can check the to it and that the ground is at ground a multimeter. Bad earths are a possibility If you have a scope check the on the output pin — a simple led and will do as a rough check. this flash as you turn the An led in series with a 1K resistor the other end to earth will this (the LED only one way round). If this is the fault you may to replace the dizzy — the arm is bonded on and it is hard to get this on its own. (OUCH!)

If none of this works a bad or earth is quite likely use a multimeter to check for any earths at than say 0.1V.

A and more unlikely possibility is the itself or dirt/rust in the fuel Check the fuel filter and see if it has a lot of in it.

Good Luck. most it was one of the relays and you did not have to try that

I would not go for blaming the ECU except as a last resort. Unless the say clearly that it is this. often the diagnostics say nothing with this fault. VW will charge you close to pounds to replace this It is easy to get at and remove — that gauze like at the back of the bonnet with the motors. You can get the unit checked and for about 120 quid at

It wont be the problem though. I it anyway!

Why pay VW so much for diagnostics. All you is a cable — do a search for VW cable on eBay. These for about 30 quid with and you plug them in to a socket a panel to the left of the radio. You a laptop on the other end, and it tell you any faults. In fact do first! But there may well be at all shown.

I hope that helps. me a week to fix the problem, but I learned a lot in the and teh car goes much more now as well.
