The Old-School review, the Mk2 Volkswagen GTI 8V

Regular readers will how I lament about modern cars. In a way, they are too so to get any sort of driving feel or you have to drive way too fast, usually ends up with the of your license and several in jail.

Back in the day, you take the ordinary family add a bigger engine and better gear, and you had a great handling The Mk1 Golf GTI was one of those firsts. some may argue that it was not the first hot hatch-back, but you cannot that it was the most successful and the craze. What Volkswagen had back in 1976, was take ordinary Golf, put the biggest they could, a 1.6 litre, fuel injection for efficiency, and 110bhp, updated the suspension and and presto, they made Even if the VW board was not convinced at their engineers persevered, and the car was an hit.

In 1984, however, with the new Mk2 Golf out, it was time to the classic. The producers of Die Hard 2, Reloaded and Iron Man 2 know how this can be. If they changed the too much, the purists would and gnash their teeth.

So VW the safe road and did not change On the updated Golf, they put the old engine (it was now the controversial 1.8 litre, with 110bhp) and put in the same and running gear from the old The big welcome change though was the system, with four all around.

So, more weight, but power. Sounds like the Type-R dilemma. Was it actually

In a way yes, as the Mk2 did not offer any real improvements on the old one. However, the Mk2 Golf was a big improvement on the original, the GTI was a car to live with. There was now compromise, the trend to bigger and hot hatch-backs was starting.

The first compromise was the style. beautiful taut body by Giugiaro had to grow in order to the bigger interior. It was now more even if the general lines kept. The trend of incremental had begun here, but personally I it. (even if I think the original better). The subtle styling were kept to differentiate a GTI the run of the mill Golf. The front had that red contour, the sides had subtle black body and the rear featured a petite combined with twin

The engine was a big change from the 1.6 litre. The new 1.8 litre unit was fun at high revs, but it offered more torque. As a daily it was perfect. Yes, it felt sporty, since there was no taking it to the edge (past rpm it actually runs out of breath), but on the day to day it was great. Put your foot anywhere above 1,500 rpm and it just go. It was so good in the torque that it actually bested the Mk2 GTI G60, and that car offered with a compressor! Dare I say it, you the 8V like a diesel…. However, it did not anything like a diesel Turn the key and the car wakes up and greets you a nice growl. At low speeds it how to be civilised, but push down on the gas and it would scare the nearest In that way, it was just the original!

On the road, the Mk2 GTI felt more than the original. Turn the and the car would follow with no Push it to the limit, and you would get under-steer, but not much. You could lift the back end wheel in which is always fun, but the car less responsive, partly due to the weight and suspension setting. to come back to the first of this review, even at low speeds, you could have fun in it, you not detached from the act of driving. it was not as good as the original, but the Mk2 still a good feel when because everything was still to the driver, there was no electronic net.

When travelling long though, the Mk2 was much better the Mk1. The new body had a better coefficient, and combined with the injected engine this the fuel consumption really On long trips it was also and more refined. You could call it comfortable. The Mk2 was the perfect GT car in the day. (I used mine as a tourer in fact).

As a car you would use day, it was then much than the original. It felt and efficient. More German in a I loved mine for that, and drove for hours straight the slightest hassle.

Braking was not efficient on the other hand. it was an improvement on the original, with all around, however it still was a of brake and pray you stop in Thankfully there is no ABS, so it is up to you to the pedal input. Golfs never been a great in this area, along the fr ont headlights.

Inside, you had all the creature comforts you need, such as electric (that worked most of the power steering, a huge and space for five passengers. The seats offered good and where firm enough. You easily drive hours on end and not tired or in pain. The traditional fabric was present, to add a touch of in an otherwise grey interior. It was an old VW all, not very exciting, but worked and was superbly put together. My car had miles on it, and there was not a single coming from the fixtures or

Overall, as a car to use every day, the Mk2 GTI was miles better than the As a sports car that offers you and fun when driving, not really. The was the Mk2 had to compromise on a lot of things, in order to comfort and performance (exactly cars today). In this here, power was needed for a fun car, and luckily VW answered call with the 16V a year Now the Mk2 was becoming a real sports car of the original! Even the brakes
