Volkswagen made 52,000 Kubelwagens for the German in the 1930s and during World War II. The is rear engined and rear drive — 4×2 — based on the famous people’s car or VW Beetle. As such its performance was little match for the Jeep MB .

The Volkswagen Iltis out of a 1960’s project for a European with amphibious abilities.

This fell through and the army later issued a non specification. The VW Iltis won this competition.

The VW has been in service with the army at least since the 1980’s. They are still in use. I have sat in one before, have a plastic footwell, the whole body. The armed personnel explained that they can float. They are with large brush and long antennas. — Ken [12/1998]
