2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI

Regular readers know I was a bit underwhelmed with the new-for-2011 which I thought lost of its essential VW-ness in the interest of to the Honda-buying masses. But I was hoping the Jetta GLI might absolve of the Jetta’s sins. So will the GLI to VW purists like me? Read on.

Volkswagen Jetta GLI: a hot-rod Jetta ought to be

The GLI is an old favorite of mine. The previous-generation GLI was a GTI with a bigger back and a trunk, which made it the family-friendly hot-rod. But now that VW has the Jetta in a slightly different than the Golf (the car on the GTI is based), the Jetta GLI, has changed — but I still it. Quite a bit, in fact.

First, let’s cover how the GLI from the regular Jetta with the 200 hp direct-injected turbocharged engine — the same engine that has been GLIs and GTIs for several — the GLI gets an independent suspension and a soft-touch dashboard, of which are missing from the Jetta, along with a body kit, red interior and all-around stiffer suspension Unfortunately, the Jetta’s shape really lend itself to the body treatment; the GLI does a bit more aggressive than the Jetta, but the changes are pretty That said, with a car quick, subtlety isn’t a bad thing.

Out on the road, the new GLI is an absolute joy. to the regular Jetta, the GLI has sharper and responsive steering, slightly ride quality, and, of it’s much, much And while the base-model Jetta handles rather well, the GLI has much more grip and The 2.0T engine’s power (200 hp/207 lb-ft) is a bit by today’s standards, but the engine produces plenty of thrust it’s needed, and you can’t go with either the six-speed or the quick-shifting DSG twin-clutch automatic .

Is it a GTI sedan? Not quite. Now that the and the Golf have grown there is a pronounced difference. The GTI lighter, quicker, and a bit more the Jetta GLI feels heavier and a bit refined. Even the engine is a bit different; the GLI has a deeper voice the GTI. All in all, the Jetta GLI like a GTI that’s grown up a bit it’s put on a bit of weight, but it hasn’t its edge. I suspect that’s VW was going for with this and considering the GLI’s generous I think it’s a worthwhile

Pricing is very reasonable the Jetta GLI starts at $24,265 a manual transmission (the DSG $1,100 more), a couple less than the previous-generation GLI and in the ballpark as the Mazdaspeed3 (which is but not as well behaved). Pricing out at $28,315 for a GLI Autobahn model DSG, dual-zone climate a sunroof, and a high-end Fender at that level it’s with nicely-equipped all-wheel-drive like the Subaru Impreza WRX and Lancer Ralliart. but the WRX can’t be had an automatic transmission and the Ralliart’s has all the ambiance of a Cuban …

All in all, I’m very, pleased with the 2012 GLI. It’s everything a Volkswagen ought to be: Refined, engineered, and good fun to drive. And it great value-for-money, an attribute not associated with Vee Dub. So the new GLI is what the old Jetta GLI was: The family-friendly (and budget-friendly) And just like the old Jetta I highly recommend it. — Gold
