E-bikes from Lexus and VW

from automakers are nothing Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Ferrari, and BMW are a few of the car companies that have bikes in the past. Some of the are better than others, but they are really just bikes that were and manufactured by another company. In cases, the bicycles are just added by the marketing department, not the branded floormats, key chains, and model cars that can at the dealership or online.

The bike concepts that recently been unveiled by and Volkswagen are a bit different though. of these new concepts are electric and they appear to have actually designed for or by the companies the that are showing them. we saw the “hybrid” Lexus bike, features a carbon fiber 8 speed internal gearing, and a electric motor. That has been spreading all over the web week with gadget design blogs, and automotive all picking up the story. On Twitter and focused blogs, the reaction to the concept bike has been negative (as you might guess). some of the apparent issues are easy to criticize… the lack of a braking system or the inability to the seat height just to a couple.  Even though I personally love the design, I state for the record that I am to see a concept e-bike from The company says that have no plans to put the bike production, but the concept is getting way mainstream press than a e-bike from a bicycle ever could.

If a luxury car company can help to the general public aware of e-bike technology, I say more to them.

Unlike Lexus, Volkswagen to actually release the “Bik.e” that they just at Auto China 2010. new concept bike has been a lot of coverage on the web too, but unfortunately “Bik.e” is not a bike at all. It is just a low range folding scooter that can be charged by the DC current. The idea of a folding bike that can be used in of the car for short trips is great, but concept, which was designed to into a flat disc can replace the spare tire in a trunk, seems to be geared toward emergency use. a range of only 12 miles for the motor, it really seems a provision for pedaling should been included. Of course, if the runs out of juice, the stranded can always just hobby the “Bik.e” the rest of the way to the service At that point, I am pretty that he or she will be wishing for old spare tire that

the “Bik.e” replaced. Maybe I am too hard on VW’s concept watch the video and let me know you think.

While I am posting about bikes (and scooters), I mention the first consumer dedicated to the growing e-bike Velo Vision Ltd will the first issue of Electric magazine in August of this The magazine will be publicly on May 8th at the Tour de Presteigne Electric Rally in the UK, so check that out if you are That is a bit too far for me to travel for the launch, but I am forward to seeing the first If it is anything like VeloVision, I it will be worth reading to cover.
