FBTB — From To Bothans

Review: 75016 Spider Droid

My love of does have its limits, and the Droid is one of those things I never really understood. I this is a universe where can hover, jet into space, and use I get why Republic and Empire used it was a mixture of intimidation and needing to people from point-A to don’t have that this guy is basically an elevated that has limited movement and a arc. Like the rest of the II sets we got in this wave except the Geonosis Duel), set is a revised Clone Wars The AT-TE and RGS had a very high bar to up to (and went 50/50 on front), the Tank Droid was for a set, and the Spider Droid has one of the bars imaginable. The original droid was fragile, ugly, and (compounded by being a TRU exclusive if I right).

This version the same price ($30), the exclusive tag, actually the piece count, and adds a new to the ever expanding palette of of poor decision making. not saying it’s all roses in the category, but at least things a bit more promising on the “I don’t like I’m being robbed”

We get four minifigs in this if you discount the little droid: a of Super Battle Droids, Allie (which sounds the punchline to “what sound a Jedi make when he over a cliff… Alliiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeee – Fett”), and a generic Clone That’s not a bad little mix.

Super Battle Droids are a bit to get than regular battle (only currently available in the RGS or 2012 Advent Calendars). guys haven’t really all that much since were first introduced in the battle packs. The only has been adding a blaster arm know, something that actually make sense in a war I like the general idea of the but I still don’t like hollow back. It seems something that’s overdue to be

I’m pretty sure that gotten about eight new Jedis this year in form (it may also be like I’m fuzzy on numbers), and  this is another one to add to the mix for our Episode II fun. I nothing about this though it somehow hits odd territory for LEGO, in that we a female minifig, strange on its But one that appears to not be lily-white is very cool.

I’m thinking head could be turned a pretty serviceable Storm for us comic fans, even if the are purple instead of white. The is odd, there is no alt face, and the on the tunic matches. She’s a character, but I’m glad to have her to diversify the Jedi palette.

Our buddy is a regular old clone, and a good thing. A lot of sets more of him, and I always more clones. Turns there were a lot of them.

Regular generic face, no and can be used almost anywhere. a lot to like with the newer variety. The only thing to be with is that you can’t get than one in any set.

There are two Spider Droids in this the big guy and the annoying little thing been a toss-in with a few sets. I think this is the version, but I’m way too lazy to go look it up (I to remember getting him once in and once in brown). I like brick-built droids, typically, and he’s simple but kind of I always like to see those turret ball socket (and don’t feel parting out an AT-TE to a whole of them).

These guys far more sense to me than Droids and Super Battle in general (as does the Spider and Droid). I mean, if you’re to build a robot army, the logic in making them efficient at doing their job by them look human. A Droid can’t do anything by you have to give it a gun to actually be I mean, look at it’s and arms, they’re not even enough to be able to choke the Their best bet when out without a gun is to try to use overwhelming numbers so when they’re shot they’ll be able to crush an or two to death.

This guy, on the other is basically a walking little Sure, maybe he’d be a bit efficient with a repulsorlift or wheels, but he doesn’t have to about visiting the armory going out on the field. Even eventually knew that you out humanity with giant space ships, not the fleshy human analogs that kept sending into

The centerpiece of the set is the “Homing Spider that its named after. Of those keeping count at will notice that about four legs of being a spider (two if feeling generous and let it count the Sure, it’s probably named for what it looks and maybe spiders in a galaxy far away only have legs (thought it’s unlikely they’d be called unless the universe just very creative), but still…

The really don’t convey the problem with this it’s… awkward. It’s not or fragile, but it doesn’t sit all that It slides around on those badly, and the center ball to tip to one side or the other, causing one set of to bend in and the others to bend It probably took me two minutes to get thing balanced just when taking the picture, just looking at it funny it go off-center.

The biggest problem the old one wasn’t the legs (though were pretty bad as well), it was the ball. The legs stuck a technic brick on either and that made it somewhat to pick up. The structure didn’t to hold up, and it was easy to accidentally the ball and send it flying I don’t really rate a on how swooshable it is (what would be a term, stompable?), but that the set almost as bad as the price.

This design fixes problem by using a large as a center hub which connects the mechanism. Instead of a single it’s now a double technic and it makes the structure very even if the legs themselves are So, very stompable, not very

The center ball actually into three distinct that thread through center ring. The inclusion of the big corner slopes, introduced with the Prince of Persia (and a couple of years the last Spider Droid out) make a world of over the blocky slopes. the whole droid on big legs is kind of silly, this just looks great. not even a contest for the look of compared to the others, and this set a cheap way to stock up on those Likewise, the little guns on the top and bottom are quite improved, and I like the general design of You could easily slap parts as-is on to a capital or ship and they wouldn’t out-of-place at all.

The last improvement in the set was adding details to the leg. The old one was basically a technic axle that awful when you put the thing Here, there are some and a hub the hide that aspect and it look like a leg instead of “we want to put enough parts in set.” The real shame is the leg doesn’t keeps steady. How you see it is the natural state it likes to go in, it’s ready to tip over.

a weird set in the grand scheme of It’s obviously a big counterpoint to the big II sets that favor the (anyone want to bet we get an updated droid next year), but still kind of obscure. We get and a clone, along with a new so the minifigures are all nice to haves. The isn’t bad at $30, and it actually is a far deal than the old one, and it much better.

At the same though, it’s probably the of the Episode II sets (Duel on  is just a bad set but has good parts). a decent model, but if I compare it things like the Corporate Tank Droid, it comes up while being more It’s not as useful parted out as given that most of the are technic elements. I think the difference for this set will be a sale, maybe down the $25 or less range. Or maybe the need for more female

What I liked

Yet Another New is always welcome

A revised set improves the look and piece but keeps the same price? is this, opposite day?

The big looks so much better the previous version

What I like

Set is awkward and the legs are wobbly, even though well built and the set isn’t as as before

Poor Super Droids still don’t get a just those mold

Parts value isn’t as as the other sets from wave

You can pick up the 75016 Homing Droid on now
