MG 1100

Discounting the ‘modern’ MG under the Metro, Maestro and banner the BMC 1100 based MG were the top selling car in Britain for years. Over 3 million variants were produced 1962 and 1973 with the MG proving to be amongst the most The 1100 was quite revolutionary and was in all the promotional literature as the most MG of all time! This statement no raised a few eyebrows from the of the diehard enthusiasts and the car was at the time a unwelcome piece of badge Launched at the same time as the all new the 1100 was somewhat overshadowed by the awaited MGA replacement.

Nonetheless the had its part to play in the success of BMC in the sixties. Originally there plans to produce an MG version of the Issigonis Mini that was in 1959 and had dominated the small saloon market for some However the Cooper name had a household name after the racing car manufacturer had won the World Championship twice and this was on by a Cooper version of the Mini. Cooper sold the idea to BMC and Austin and Morris versions produced to cash in on the Cooper This immediately shelved any of an MG badge engineered high Mini. Many design were produced by the Abingdon team, some of which two seater based but sadly the won the day particularly as the Mini’s designer Issigonis did not think that the front wheel drive set up was for a sports car. BMC needed a small saloon car to market the fairly large Magnette which by now was in Farina Mk IV style.

The American market was judged as ready for an MG ‘compact’ and with in mind the badge engineered MG was launched nearly a year the first Austin/Morris versions first seen. Despite the welcome the car was an outstanding success its introduction in September 1962. The MG was far better appointed throughout a twin carburettor engine and a MG front grille. It was capable of 4 adults with comfort, the Mini would prove The advanced Hydrolastic fluid provided exceptional ride and it was the first time that system had been used on an MG. new kind of suspension, thus the pitching problems associated standard suspension because and rear units were Pitching movements were all but because shocks to the suspension instantly smoothed out by an interchange of between front and rear.

The 1098cc A-Series engine was transversely in the front sub frame and an integral gearbox along the lines as the Mini with through the front wheels. A top of 88 mph was easily achievable with the producing 55 bhp at 5,500 rpm and with acceleration to match it was as quick as any of its The 1100 was available in two door initially with 4 door following later, it was felt two doors went better the sporting MG image! The two door was to spearhead the attack on the American car market which in 1962 was by Volkswagen. The MG Sports Sedan as it was cost £949, however was a problem identifying which MG were aiming at with and promotional films showing it as an shopping car and at the other extreme, a car for club racing, either way the car slowly with nearly being sold over a of 5 years.

By 1967 the 1100 was beginning to somewhat dated its initial performance, economy, and handling being surpassed by competitors. The range of 1100 saloons then given a face and uprated. The MG version now sported a engine and the two door body was as an option. The fascia and instruments was improved and although initially as the MG 1275 it was soon adopted as the MG Four speed automatic was an option but in this case a SU carburettor was employed. In manual the engine produced a healthy 70 bhp and the remained virtually the same it was discontinued in 1971 in favour of the 1275 GT, the only changes in 1969 when the four option and automatic transmission dropped. There were proposed MG versions of the 1100 never saw full scale one being an MG badged Vanden Princess that very changed its identity back to Plas in 1964. The BMC Spanish Authi, did produce an MG 1100 licence alongside Minis, were very similar to English counterpart except were left hand and carried Spanish instrumentation. A MG Victoria made an appearance at the Motor Show in 1973 but went on sale to the public, was similar to a stretched Triumph and was adorned with MG badges and a tuned engine. This was to be the of the MG saloons until the arrival of the MG in 1982.

The concours MG 1100 we feature in article is a 1963 model to Ray Shrubb of Whitley in Surrey. Ray is the second owner of the car and it came his possession in December 1988 a genuine 45,000 miles on the 955 GYV at first looked in good for its 25 years on the road but a rear end had made its mark on the wing, and bumper bar. Ray immediately set to to restore the MG to its former glory and was fortunate to locate a new rear and bumper after weeks of likely ex-BMC agents. For the sum of £15 the parts were his and still had the BMC labels on! After a total stripdown everything except the was refurbished (the engine is winters projects) and the results of hard work were with a class win in the MGOC at Knebworth this year. was the first outing for the car and since Ray has secured more firsts at other MG concours events. Ray and his wife are very active of Epsom MGOC and are on the comittee staged Surrey ’89 at Leatherhead. Ray also has a concours Midget and an MGB GT and if the three MG’s are not to keep him busy there

is another project on the way, a Midget which I can confirm is an wreck. No doubt we will see restored to the same high as Rays other MG’s.
