Transaxle Overview

As the name the transaxle combines the gearbox and the differential (usually part of the ‘axle’) in a single unit. The Magnesium alloy transaxle contains the four speed at the front, the differential in the middle and the bell-housing at the rear.

There been 4 basic types of used in the Beetle; Split swing-axle; Tunnel case Dual differential cover Single differential cover The split case swing-axle is the earliest and weakest of the three and is for off road use. The tunnel swing-axle type is stronger but can be used with swing-axle suspension. The dual differential IRS is stronger still, due to absorption of and lateral forces by the floating and CV joints. Finally, the single cover IRS is the strongest, as one of the differential covers is cast into the thereby increasing the rigidity of the unit.

As I have already decided to use rather than swing-axle suspension, I will have to use an IRS transaxle. However, as well as the two of Type 1 (Beetle) IRS transaxle, above, there is a third which is to use the much stronger 2 (bus/camper van) IRS transaxle. whilst it is considerably stronger, it is physically bigger, and heavier, and be mounted easily in the buggy modifications to the frame horns and the shift rod outside (above) the tunnel. Since the Type 1 IRS is strong enough for most applications, except flat-out and can be strengthened with after-market if it becomes necessary, I will with this type of in order to minimise the installation

Transaxle Code Location

It me a while to find where the code is located, as there are a lot of numbers cast into parts of the transaxle, none of contain the useful type referred to in the table below. The code is stamped (not into the gearbox casting and has been visible after the area with a wire on all the transaxles I’ve looked at. So is it? It’s on the RHS of the gearbox when from the clutch bell-housing end same side as the starter stamped into a flat of the gearbox casting, just the horizontal plane, on an area angled slightly downwards, as in the picture above.

Understanding Transaxle Codes

codes are of the form: ‘AM 24 02 where ‘AM’ is the transaxle code, ’24’ is the day, is the month and ‘3’ the last of the year of manufacture. A transaxle this code therefore has the ratios shown in the table for the ‘AM’ type code and was on 24th February 1973.

Type Codes Ratios

the development of the Type 1 transaxle, VW many changes to the design to suit it to cars of different with different powered in order to achieve different characteristics. One of the significant changes was to the used for the ring and pinion used in the differential and for 4th gear. It can be from the table below the ratios for 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears did not significantly throughout the development.

The ring and pinion affects the gearing, with all gears affected equally. A higher value for the ratio means gearing, which roughly to higher acceleration but lower top The ratio for 4th gear affects and top speeds. Again, a higher value equates to lower giving a lower top speed.

The below gives a summary of the transaxle types which can be used in a beach buggy. The shown in bold italics are the which I have. The AH box came the 1302S donor vehicle, the AM was for its lower gearing and stronger differential cover case and the DC was because I thought the Type 3 box may be internally (I don’t know this is true or not).
