Next to the Jeep, the Kubelwagen has to be one of the most utility vehicles of the Second War. Based on specifications in early 1938, the prototype 62 was designed by Porsche engineers on the VW Type 60 ‘KdF-Wagen’ (a.k.a. chassis and engine. The Type 62 underwent field trials in 1938, and modifications to the design in the production standard Type 82. The 62 had a body style reminiscent of Beetle sibling, but one of the changes by the German Army was that the be more military, the result of was the archetypically Teutonic final

By war’s end 50,435 Kubelwagens had produced, plus another Type 166 Schwimmwagens (the vehicle based on the same Although these may seem large numbers, compared to the Jeeps produced by Willys, and Bantam they only to highlight the limitations of German during WWII.

The Kit

Tamiya has Kubelwagen kits in 1:16, (old and new tooling), and now in 1:48. The kit is of their recent releases in they combine excellent fit thoughtful engineering without detail.

The moldings are extremely sharp with no flash or sink and only very faint separation lines. Visible pin marks are limited to the inside of the separate front doors and the of the seats. In both cases the are shallow and easily filled superglue or Mr. Surfacer and sanded

Engine detail is limited to a of the sump (did the flat engine even have a molded into the underside. is covered by an underpan so not much is anyway.

The cabin is also nicely but missing a few details, notably the brake and gas pedals as well as the box in the driver’s foot well and the knob on the transmission tunnel. The wheel is very delicate, only the finest of mold to clean up. The one instrument is well with raised detail and all of the dashboard details are present.

When I initially the kit I had every intention of doing it out of the box, but then I spotted a little reference on the Kubelwagen. Graph No. 10 covers the Kubelwagen in detail, with captioned photographs of a restored example. written with modellers in I just had to buy it. At this point I that it would be a waste of reference material if I didn’t advantage of it and do at least some detailing. Fortunately for my bank there aren’t any aftermarket available, otherwise I probably have applied the same and spent even more

I decided to build the in two major subassemblies in order to painting the interior. Using the as a general guide, I assembled the frame and upper body, off a few items such as the exhausts, tire and under body

Flat spots were on the tires so that the model not be up on it’s tippy-toes, and the front were attached at a slight for a more candid appearance.

the Rossa Graph as a guide, I or replaced the following details:

valve stems from sprue;

Headlight, horn and motor wiring from wire and fine solder;

MV Lens headlights;

Fuel cap line from wire;
