What’s the main difference IDI and TDI engines??

question comes up often, and I found a couple of cool that help explain it.

IDI

The acronym IDI generally refers to Injection. In this configuration fuel is injected indirectly the combustion chamber via a pre-combustion inserted into the head:

The IDI engine was standard VW passenger car until mid 1997 and may or may not be coupled a turbo. Engines of this without a turbo are often to as NA or normally aspirated engines. IDI uses a pintle-style nozzle sprays fuel in a mist and are into the head like plugs. Due to the heat-sinking capacity of the head IDI engines generally the use of glow plugs on all but warm

The fuel system for an IDI engine is always 100% mechanically via a Bosch VE distributor-type pump, Europe got a late version of the AAZ that had some vestiges of timing control. Throttle is via mechanical cable to the throttle

TDI Engines:

The acronym TDI generally to Turbo Direct Injection. In configuration diesel fuel is directly into the combustion formed by a depression machined the crown of the piston:

The Direct Injection engine appearing in European VW passenger in 1991, in some North Passats in 1996, and were in circulation world-wide by mid-1997. In all but cases the direct injection is equipped with a turbo, the confusion some folks thinking their turbo-equipped IDI is a TDI. In 2009 VW the so-called Clean TDI design. a rail system with a different injection system yet


For a variety of reasons, including precise fuel control and thermal losses, TDI engines obtain better fuel than their turbo-equipped IDI
