What’s the main difference IDI and TDI engines??

Vincent Waldon :

question comes up often, and I found a couple of cool that help explain it.

The acronym IDI generally refers to Injection. In this configuration fuel is injected indirectly the combustion chamber via a pre-combustion inserted into the head:

The IDI engine was standard VW passenger car until mid 1997 and may or may not be coupled a turbo. Engines of this without a turbo are often to as NA or normally aspirated engines. IDI uses a pintle-style nozzle sprays fuel in a mist and are into the head like plugs. Due to the heat-sinking capacity of the head IDI engines generally the use of glow plugs on all but warm

The fuel system for an IDI engine is always 100% mechanically via a Bosch VE distributor-type pump, Europe got a late version of the AAZ that had some vestiges of timing control. Throttle is via mechanical cable to the throttle

TDI Engines:

The acronym TDI generally to Turbo Direct Injection. In configuration diesel fuel is directly into the combustion formed by a depression machined the crown of the piston:

The Direct Injection engine appearing in European VW passenger in 1991, in some North Passats in 1996, and were in circulation world-wide by mid-1997. In all but cases the direct injection is equipped with a turbo, the confusion some folks thinking their turbo-equipped IDI is a TDI. The nozzle sprays in 5 discrete jets and is held the head with a top-mounted Glow plugs are not generally until the engine temperature near freezing.

The fuel on a TDI generally uses a electronically-controlled pump with an Engine Unit, and the throttle is drive-by-wire a potentiometer-equipped pedal.

A primarily home-built variant of the TDI known as m-TDI uses the TDI body and nozzles but substitutes required for manual (ie cable) control.

A more recent of the TDI design, commonly referred to as PD or duse, uses individual that are driven off the valve to pressurize the fuel to extremely pressures and spray it out a nozzle 7 holes. North America got PD from 2003-2006.

In 2009 VW the so-called Clean TDI design. a rail system with a different injection system yet

For a variety of reasons, including precise fuel control and thermal losses, TDI engines obtain better fuel than their turbo-equipped IDI

Great cutaways! The Passats getting the TDI engines in #039;96.

And, in general and gals. correct at will. update the top post accordingly

I wish we would have half of the sweet diesels over the pond.
