New Beetle Oil Change

by Mike C.

As many articles as Ive on the air-cooled variety of VWs, time I put in some info for you New owners out there. I admit though Ive owned a New since 1998, its me awhile to learn the ins, and idiosyncrasies of these wonderful of transportation. Why this long? apart from doing oil and other minor things, you can keep the hood shut the front decklid) and just and wax it once in awhile. Yes, the New along with VWs fine autos, is a very relatively maintenance-free vehicle. just like any car out there, you change the oil regularly to keep the characteristic alive. In this I will go into the oil change for the New Beetle. Keep in mind, the will apply (perhaps minor exceptions) to the Golf and (98-up) as well.

of all, let me start by giving you a few What type of oil you choose to use is up to I do recommend that you use 10W-30 oil round. There are three types of oil:

100% mineral oil

100% synthetic oil.

mineral oil is the least expensive, it anywhere, and has run many a car past miles. You must keep oil changed regularly, as it tends to down more quickly the synthetics. I wouldnt recommend past 3000 miles 100% mineral oil.

M blend is middle-of-the-road in price and a bit better start-up protection 100% mineral oil.

synthetic oils are the most but the best in terms of cold protection, friction reduction, and temperature resistance (great for you 1.8 folks). My recommendation is that you go no than 5000 miles changes with the 100% If you choose to go 100% synthetic, let a new car go to its oil change interval and then over. Piston rings are seated after the first 20 or so of running, therefore it should be no switching when the time

Do use a genuine VW oil filter, as they the correct bypass valves and valves so your engine see possible long-term damage.

put more than 4.7 quarts of oil in engines (2.0 and 1.8 both use 4.5 or you may damage the catalytic converter! is where it may stop many of you changing your own oil dont try to the car up anywhere in the middle! The only you can jack up your New Beetle causing serious damage is the rocker panels, where you put the scissors-jack. I highly recommend you use and drive the car up on them and then

Given that, heres youll need to do the job:

Set of

Oil filter wrench*

19mm wrench

5 Quarts of 10W-30 oil of choice

Drain pan

T-20 driver

3/8 ratchet

3/8 Drive long extension

towels or rags

* A specific-fit can be found at auto parts

If your New Beetle is hot from the let it cool down for an hour you work on it. Youll be getting hands pretty close to the fan, and that thing doesnt need to come on you are getting the oil filter out!

Get the out, position them and have a friend help you up on them. When you are up there, the engine and pull up the parking

Open the hood.

Get the T-20 driver and take out the torx that hold the plastic on underneath the front.

After you get out, slide the cover and take it out. Look up the engine compartment. See the oil filter? The hose runs almost beneath it.

Slide the drain pan the car.

Get your ratchet, put the oil wrench on it, and proceed to undo the If it is the first oil change or you dont who changed the oil before, the oil filter may be tight. There just enough room for one of those one fits all filter wrenches. you have the filter loose, the wrench off and undo it the rest of the way by

Things are getting pretty by now, as the oil is dripping off the filter and things slick.

After the filter out, get the 19mm wrench and undo the oil pan (drain) let the old oil drain in the pan.

While draining, wipe off the oil filter surface with a paper

Get out your new filter and make the gasket is there.

Lubricate the with motor oil and fill the with oil. You can put about a or so of oil in there. Any more, and it will make a mess. What you are is helping the engine achieve oil pressure much more than having to wait for a few seconds for the oil filter to fill up when you start the engine.

Put the new filter on, spin it on until the just makes contact. take your oil filter and tighten the filter around one turn.

Wipe the area the oil drain plug hole and the drain plug. Dont here, just make it snug.

Now get out from under the but dont install the plastic yet. Be sure to pull all tools and drain pan out from

Remove the oil cap and pour four quarts of oil in (remember, some of it is in the if you filled it).

Put the oil cap back on and the engine. Make sure the oil light goes out and back the car off the

Roll it where you can wash the of the engine. Spray some Green on all the parts that oil got and let it sit for a minute and wash it off. way, you wont get an oily from your engine.

When you are through, put the plastic back on underneath the car. leave it off, as it does proper airflow in and around the compartment.

Let the engine sit a few minutes on level ground) and recheck the It should be in the hatched area on the
