1958 Deluxe Safari Bus

This is a Deluxe VW Transporter in June of 1958 with safari windows, wide pop out windows, a gas heater, army gas crank start, etc. are some BEFORE pictures.

is a great story behind classic bus. I bought it a hippie who looks just Santa. He had stored it for the last 30 on his land hidden deep in the hills of the New Mexico desert. He the bread to pay off the taxes on his beautiful I paid him a fair price and it up. The rest is self evident the pics.

This is a very bus. The safari windows and spoon pop out windows are rare accessories for a ’58. There is a 6v gas heater under the seat is complete. Also the single deck lid and rear crank apron are both intact. I the original small round taillights I am going to reinstall.

The gas can is functional. The deck lid and gas door via the original skeleton key which was stashed inside a door the door panel. The little door and window accentuate the rounded shape. All the hubcaps are This is one truly amazing volkswagen.

The partition has a rare handle at the right of the entrance. It has a open interior with no rear seats. But it has some carpet to relax on and both the rubber floor mats are All the glass is genuine Sigla one front pane which was by Chris (Santa). Chris was a & did some quality repairs 30+ years ago. I over where he left

As the story goes, Chris and his Beth drove «»»»Glinda»»»» good witch of the East bus) up through Canada to the Coast and down to San Francisco back East across the to NM where they settled in 1978. They said push started it the entire way and it had reverse (however Chris replaced the trans) Here bought land, hauled it 150 into the most rugged desert wilderness imaginable put it up on blocks for the next three

It took two day long trips the abyss and a large stack of bills before I put it on wheels and was to find it still rolled after three long Any rust had long since dried up by the extreme desert that preserved this as a time capsule. Cleaning up bus I was consistently impressed and amazed what I found.

The camper windows are not original they installed by Chris so they have the windows open in the I pulled up the mats for you so you can see the floors are solid for a 50 year old volkswagen. buses are rare so I accept as they are, rust, reapirs and all. At the price I am it should be a rolling shell not a key ready cross country daily driver. I have 1000 hours and 10K invested. I never was in it for the money. If you are then you just come nit pick.

The bus had painted red when I got it. Here are the pics. However the weather had off most of it already, exposing paint below. There several layers of post paint jobs. I began these off and found original I settled on touch up painting of the bus to match what was left of the paint. The bus would really if it had a new paint job though.

I have the a clean clear in my name. This bus was imported by the Auto Co Ltd of Tokyo Japan. The stamped plate reads: Volkswagen. Model: Deluxe, 2308527, Chassis #:345609, Del June — 58, Our Car-No: The top of the tag is written in Japanese. There are amazing tags and marking all this relic. It now has brand new tags, registration, and is ready to Keep looking to see restored.

and his wife sold the original of the bus to make rent when hit NM. I bought two correct 1950s era vw and tore them down to this one. I just it over the rocky mountains to Springs, Co. However it was underpowered so I to a 1600cc dual port. the lights were dim so I upgraded to with a new bosch alternator. I upgraded the cluch, pressure etc to a larger diameter. I also put in a new cylinder and replaced two wheel with new front brake Then I drove it to Denver Co to the High Music Festival and on to Utah, Nevada, Arizona, LA and finally sunny San Diego, 7/27-09. What an adventure!

evidence of post war era production can be in the tag just to the right of the motor the engine compartment. It says in Western Germany. The tag on the right is entirely in German. It has a hand start handle included!

I also have some tools, boxes of rare extra parts and goodies, Must see in person.

All electrical is now The brake system is working but needs attention. The swing transmission was replaced to a later and is good with all gears reverse. Driving this bus for the time since the 70s was an amazing and unforgettable experience. I popped the and hit the road like mad max on a harley What a rush man!

Any is long dead from the dry NM desert climate and has now been and undercoated. For a 50 year old bus it is in pretty condition. I once drove an old 23 with a wooden floor was three times as rusty country. This one is not bad. I took this bus back and over the sttepest mountains in the and posted regular videos on to prove it. Stay tuned for my Keep on truckin’!

This is the vw bus I have ever found. I this bus to be a piece of vw history as as an iconic piece of US cultural It has a dent in the nose from Chris was moving it into the that has since been out and repaired but could still be It is now fairly straight and a very find indeed. It took me 20 to just to locate this bus. I have well 10k into her so far. I do not want to her but financial stress forces no hassle sale. Price now reduced to $4950 firm. cash takes no holds or

UPDATE: The bus has come a long way I found her. Much and $$$ has been invested and it shows. I am a loss? I don’t think so. I had the of my life and became wiser and I just drove the coolest on the road over the rockies and then across the country to the of San Diego. I am not in it for the $.
