Preparing the Camper for Transplant

no video this time, too to make time for editing…

to get moving!

Now that the Tesla S drivetrain and suspension are working it’s time to get moving on the My mid July deadline for driving to TMC in Monterey, California is coming up and I still have many problems looming. At this I hope the Stretchla is running, has at one seat and makes it down and back, I have no expectations it will be anywhere near There’s nothing like a to focus work!

Preparation of the Body

In the above picture my Arthur and Debbie happened to be when the sun warmed up the day, I was able to rope them helping with the car wash. Vanagon body has a lot of parts to it that will not be needed in the transmogrification. That’s a very thing since the projected of it all worries me. In one of my earlier posts I the removal of the Stretch’s diesel and transaxle with Tony and Now the time has come to strip out the of the parts that are not needed, as as many parts that may or may not go in once I’ve reviewed budgets.

Being rather large and of steel, the Vanagon body is not especially since I added feet to its length! The challenge is I intend to use the original unmodified S air suspension, wheels and tires. The Model S is very light for a car a 1300 lb battery pack it is made mostly of aluminum. Car and quotes the model S curb as 4,753 lbs and mine with parts already removed 4386 lbs. If I combine the (Gross Axle Weight of the front and rear, the Model S allow up to 6120 lbs. I to exceed that some, but I want to take any one tire the max 1653 lb tire rating. would allow up to 6612 lbs travel weight if I managed to the weight perfectly amongst the corners. That’s only a overload on the air struts and I feel with that.

How to keep it down to that For one, I don’t intend to the van nearly as badly as I have in the At times in the last 14 years the has carried everything from a ton of lead acid batteries, a engines, copper piles, and even a short trip 16 people and 4 dogs. Over the I’ve weighed it in various coming in at 4790 to 7750 lbs on load and engine type.  At time I don’t know the weight of the parts that I to use from the Model S, but I can guess a large part of the 4400 lbs I’m starting with. Since is such an unknown at this I’m starting to keep records. The less the fuel, engine, and related supporting parts 4140 lbs last week. The and drivetrain removal parts are to have weighed about 650 lbs at scale adding up to an empty weight of 4790.  In the pictures you can see that I’ve removed 1560 lbs (Stretch is now sitting at lbs) since that and I’m keeping track of individual so I can decide which items need a diet. The removed break down like

299 lbs of general camping gear in over the years. That the jacks, tools, microwave and

203 lbs of things that are probably not back in including 70 lbs of stereo, 60 lbs of panel and the aluminum 40 gallon tank.

Volkswagen Vanagon

410 lbs of original Westfalia camping gear not including the pop this may need a diet.

153 lbs of things going back in the sliding door and windshield.

505 lbs of that are not going back in the radiator, dashboard, brake and pedal cluster, batteries, fuel tank, and 37.8 lbs of

The Trouble With Projects

The with working on a large like this is that very hard to know to stop. I have a deadline but despite that the more I apart the van, the more I this is the perfect time to it up and paint it. But if I did that, where I stop? How good of a job would I do?

One I know for sure is that a paint job is out of my budget, and spending doing it myself is also not in the On the other hand there are of rust areas that I’d to treat and I’d like to freshen up the as well. I owned my last for about a decade feeling with the lack of paint I finally I gave up the idea of paint and spent one day with quality house paint a roller to give it a “twenty-foot” job. A “twenty-foot” paint job is the of paint that looks OK twenty feet away but as you get you start to wonder why it looks a bit house paint! I was very with the result even if car didn’t understand the appeal. from being very and easy to do, another advantage of a low tech paint job is that easy to fix when I make mods like adding the flares. I’m thinking I may do something here as what I did on the old Stretch. I’ll see if I can borrow the pressure from my friend Josiah to alkali playa dust off the and treat the surface rust

the dust created, then have to see about the rest. ago I snapped a picture of a Vanagon a red and white paint job I liked much, maybe I’ll over to the paint store and see if still sell high oil based enamels…
