Vanagon – new wheels and tire

Too long i have suffered the from fellow syncro about the teeny stock and tires I use. Finally I some wheels that let me join the real mens They aren’t my first but the size, price, and offset all right. They are 15×7 15 hole alloys from an ’90′s 380SL. The offset is 25 I kinda like, I wanted clearance from tire to components. Another good about these particular is the thickness of the casting where the lug goes through. In this it is only 11mm, some can be as as 44mm. I would have to longer studs for any wheel than 11mm and that was i did not want to do (its a pain to do the studs on a syncro). This thickness will come up

Anyhoo, I’m not going to go into all the choices in this post. Im going to show you what I did to see if one particular tire would The tire in question is a Yokohama GL AT-S 225/70 15. They I think a load rating of which is my, probably flexible, limit.

Here’s one bolted up. I this one a bit (they all need to try out a primer. The wheels have to the stud holes drilled out to fit on the Vanagon studs. They originally drilled to accept studs. You also have to get new lug the small seat ball as opposed th the conical Vanagon I got the hardware from T3 Techniques. and I have received a lot of great from the owner Chris the years.

The trial fit was on the rear wheel for a few reasons. the rears have the shortest projection, just flush the stock steel wheels. the alloys I got about 6.5 turns of the nut to tight. Now with the thread being 14X1.5 mm that the nut goes on 9.75mm. I would liked more, 14mm be the same as with the steel I don’t know if this of thread engagement is not sufficient, have any thoughts?

edit: 9.3 turns would me 14mm of thread engagement. would be grand, but there is a notice of requiring 6.4 turns So what to do? I am leaning towards studs for the rear. The front might be ok, there is a couple of exposed with the stock wheel, unlike the flush on the rears.

The second reason to fitment on the rear wheels is to if rim and tire combo clears the arm. I made a rough of the tire profile from data. What I am not 100% about is the sidewall height. I made the template so that the height was measured from the lip of the When i held the template up to the it interfered quite a bit with the arm. I thought this as I am sure I have heard of size tire fitting the trailing arm, even on with higher offset. So i the template so that the sidewall includes the tire bead

Not a great picture but you can see the notches I cut and you can see is not only about 1/4″ of between template and the pinch seam on the trailing arm. My does not have radiuses so that might exaggerate a bit.

I don’t know if this up illustrates the clearance any better.

The other worry is that a wide tire and a 25 mm offset rim might be interference with the door. Well no worries it clears with about to spare (close to my paper
