Aaron converts to Jettaism

The sedan is the best-selling car in Volkswagen’s lineup. I’ve always the Jetta for its family-friendly interior and safety record, and I love the GLI version — but I’ve found the plan-vanilla Jetta a dull. Has anything changed for Yes — just enough, as it out, to change my opinion. base, $19,904 as tested, EPA economy estimates 21-22 MPG 29 MPG highway.

First Glance: ho-hum Jetta. or is it?

My original was to write up the 2008 Volkswagen as a Quick Test Drive. reviewed a handful of Jettas the current model was introduced in and it wasn’t long ago that I praise upon the Jetta GLI as a car that excels at family Man, did I love that But I’ve never been a big fan of the Jetta variant, which up until this year was known as the Jetta 2.5. driven a handful of them, all automatic transmissions, and I’ve been impressed — I the styling was a bit too dull, the price a bit too and the driving experience a bit too lack-luster.

And then Volkswagen sent particular Jetta to me for testing and it was as if they’d ordered my test car the express purpose of converting me to And you know what? It worked.

For my test car was finished in red — not fancy high-tech shade of red a whimsical name like Blush Pearlsonic Flakecoat, but ol’ non-metallic red, did a beautiful job of showing off the Jetta’s grille and alloy wheels goes to photo). (Alas, my didn’t come out so well, the VW-supplied photos of the white The Jetta’s paint palette some very nice shades of grey and blue, but I the car looks its best in plain, colors like red or white.

The next issue the had to tackle — in my eyes, at — was the value equation. sees a new model lineup for the last year’s Jetta 2.5 has split into S, SE and SEL models. I the mid-level SE; for just under it comes with power mirrors and locks, air conditioning, 6-disc CD changer, height-adjustable seat, alloy wheels, leather, and a tilt and telescope wheel. Too spendy? The Jetta S $2,800 less and is still nicely equipped.

The Jetta’s is a bit plasticky and austere, but it’s and easy to use. Size-wise, the feels mid-way between a and a mid-size. It’s easy to in crowded urban areas, yet it has of space for four adults. And I say enough good things the trunk. which is big, and easy to load.

The only thing I really like about the Jetta was the ($144) iPod adapter. (theoretically) allows you to control the through the stereo. But the stereo can access the first five it doesn’t display track and the controls are confusing in a way I never possible. I spent ten minutes through the literary epic is the Jetta’s owner’s manual to figure out how to access shuffle and I still couldn’t make it right. Unbelievable. The good If you don’t opt for this electronic you get a plain ol’ auxiliary jack. For free.

On the Road: power and a third pedal a huge difference

I mentioned I’ve always found the Jetta a bit dull to drive. So made this one different? For one Volkswagen has fortified the 2.5 liter engine for 2008 — is 170 horsepower, up 20 from last while torque rises by 7 to 177. Despite the extra the engine is slightly more efficient than last car, though fuel is still below average for a sedan. VW builds a PZEV Zero Emissions Vehicle) for California-compliant states; unlike PZEVs,which extract a power the Jetta’s PZEV engine out just as much power as the version. Way to go, VW!

The extra power definitely the grin factor, but what I fell in love with was my car’s manual transmission. The 2.5 is droning and dull, but the 5-speed really wakes the engine up. If you have an automatic, I’d skipping the 2.5 and buying either the GLI or Edition, both of which are with VW’s stellar 200 hp engine. (Of those two, take the GLI, which Volkswagen’s Direct Shift in place of the Wolfsburg’s conventional

Handling is wonderful; I took the up to the About.com Cars Top Secret Test Road and it seemed to the drive every bit as much as I But the ride quality — or thereof — came as a bit of a with the firmly-sprung Jetta and joggling over LA’s freeways. Oddly enough, it was as as could be on the bumpiest sections of the Test Road.

Journey’s End: So what quality?

One I haven’t discussed is build I have several friends who own VWs; one has had no problems, one has her own private space at her dealer’s service and the rest fall somewhere in VWs built in Mexico — the Jetta — seem to the worst. It’s worth however, that all of my VW-owning love their cars, no how troublesome they are. My car felt pretty solidly together, but if I bought a Jetta, I plan on the same sort of ownership experience one can expect say, a Honda.

As you can tell, I was really impressed the Jetta. It turns out that the car perceived as a slightly dull, snobbish family hauler have a soul after all it’s just a matter of it right. — Aaron
