Rotary Engine Porsche 914 Might Have Been

The 914 has held an interesting place in the history.  Far from powerful, it was a runabout that probably its kindest designation as the economical .  But not all of the 914 was in Porsche’s control, and that have been the reason why one version was never produced.

The starts in the 1960s when needed a car to replace their level 912 model.  At the same Volkswagen was looking to branch out something more sporting the Karmann Ghia.  The close between Porsche and VW had them one car to fill both company’s The plan was to combine Volkswagen’s size with Porsche’s talents to create a two versions of the coupe — different engines and features would help the cars distinct in the marketplace.

The model 914 ended up carrying the VW and Porsche name in Europe (it was a Porsche in the U.S.,) but this was Volkswagen’s car.  They for the tooling, and it moved using flat-four engine.  When it time for Porsche to install the six-cylinder motor out of the previous 911T, their relationship VW had changed.  New management had turned the gentleman’s agreement into a power play.  They Porsche a much higher than planned for the body which meant the 914/6 had a tag of $5,999 when it hit America.  In that was only about less than the lowest on the 911 ladder (less than $3k today’s money.)

The 914/6 flopped with 3350 produced from through 1972.  It was important to go this history because it a fatal flaw with the car on this page.

Wealthy Dr. Alfred Gerber decided he a unique sports car.  In the 1970s he contracted the Swiss Franco Sbarro to build him a 914.  Sbarro removed the from a 914/6 (not how rare and valuable they are and replaced it with the dual-rotor and semi-automatic transmission out of a NSU Ro80.  the compact nature of the engine it an easy fit in the engine bay, the end of the car had to be fitted for radiators as this went from air to water

When Auto Motor tested the car in 1971, it found the to be significantly quieter than the 914/6.  The Wankel engine was more powerful than the flat six (about 5 hp difference), but the 120 mph top was 5 mph slower.  The explanation was that the weight from the new cooling held the rotary car back.

showed his car to Porsche, but today we that was the wrong move.  If the was too expensive to be successful, then were not going to spend new on a version that did not offer better performance.  Instead, might have been a receptive audience.  While we can speculate on a relationship with VW, we do that they had the lower point on 914 manufacturing and the best to the rotary engine utilized in car.

VW took over NSU in 1969, and with it, acquired the rights to the engine.  It was the warranty claims on the rotary motor that had NSU to the point of this takeover, but didn’t stop the newly subsidiary Audi NSU Auto-Union selling the licenses for the Wankel to car companies.  At a time like VW might have been keen to show that the could work in other and a quicker version of the 914 might been a real interest.

While we found no evidence Volkswagen sampled the rotary-powered it couldn’t have lived long at VW anyway.  Ferdinand was no fan of the Wankel engine because of its nature.  He was still hanging Porsche when Gerber Stuttgart his car.  Within a few Piëch had switched from his company to Audi.  The window for a 914 could have only open when Piëch was not He was so much against the Wankel one of his first duties at Audi was to the company’s worldwide contracts for the

Today the Wankel 914/6 is to still reside in the Gerber collection.  Any production reality have likely ended up a blunder that gets in the same breath as the Ro80. By doomed to be a one-off, this car to remain an interesting oddity occasionally lets us wonder, if…”
