If not Big Oil, why won’t the VW XL1 be coming to Because it doesn’t have to.

When like Tesla, Volkswagen, and Toyota drop word they have a new concept EV or MPG car in the works people have reason to get excited.  Ever and attractive the electric car is one of those that has been ten years for the last thirty years. The that we can make our daily cost pennies, avoid the gas and do it in a sexy sports car body the American psyche in a big way. So a story breaks that one of the contenders in the market the 261 MPG Volkswagen XLI going to come to the U.S because too efficient” and “threatens Oil Profits” its to buy into the conspiracy theory and big oil. Even though the XL1 be reaching U.S Production lines it was built to in the first place.  the question, why then was the car ever

Killing the MPG rumor:

Before lets put the rumors to rest. The reason the car won’t be in the U.S Is not because too efficient.

As Michael Ballben of mentions in his article. the first and biggest reason that we see the XL1 in the U.S is because of safety standards.  that the XL1 is not a plug in electric or a hybrid. The car is powered by old-fashioned fuel combustion. This the car susceptible to the safety standards of other automobile currently in

The XL1 is still very much a car, and in the pursuit of streamlined aerodynamics the designers left features that are required by U.S law out of the car including: side and rear mirrors, crumple zones and bumpers.

The VW XL1 in Profile

Yes, it is but unlikely that Big Oil is the reason the XL1 be leaving Europe. After all the is known for using hardball to protect their profits. for example the use of Lead in gasoline for the part of the 20 th century.  Even as a toxin that causes memory loss and stunted it took over two decades for to appear that mandated the use and distribution of unleaded gasoline.  By scientists to promote a pro-lead and paying lobbyist to protect political action the Oil Industry was to stymie the switch to unleaded for decades.

The same tactics could be to regulate auto standards in of inefficient gas guzzlers- preventing EVs and MPG cars like the XL1 from to the states.  But remember that cars are not only produced as jalopnik.com reminds us Tesla is the and closer threat to oil profits.

Why build the XL1?

It is clear the VW XL1 is not a direct threat to oil profits it was most likely never to be a production car. It is more that the XL1 is an engineering pet project for designed to draw attention to the It is meant to show the public the company can compete in the efficiency with brands like Tesla and Chevrolet.

Volkswagen actually need to have the car on lots for consumers to show up and a car.  Lets face it. As as we all would love a Tesla Model S. or Volkswagen XL1 these are out of most of our price ranges. like how high end Macintosh sell entry-level laptops, cars sell entry-level The brand recognition gained by the XL1 may be enough to get some consumers on the lot and from VW’s competitors. an arms race and right now VW has the missile… the XL1.

It is true that outdated safety and material standards cars like the XL1 from the U.S market, but ultimately that’s Engineering projects like the XL1 a bigger point that we forget, products like that we use on a daily bases can be more efficiently. Although the XL1 may not be in garage in the coming year it is a towards a more efficient future.
